Cars broken into regularly on Netherland Avenue between 230th and 231st
Anyone who has walked down Netherland Avenue between 230th Street and 231st Street knows that car windows of the cars parked on the south side of the street are shattered regularly—the entire sidewalk is lined from end to end with shattered glass and often you can see the latest car-victim parked on the street with its passenger-side window smashed.
I was one of the victims several months ago after making the mistake of parking on the south side of the street. As I discovered the shattered window, several local residents walked by saying “you should know better than to park on this street.”
We called the police to report the crime. Their response was something like: “We know, it happens all the time. Local gangs smash windows as an initiation. They immediately run down the stairs (located on 230th Street) back to Kingsbridge. There is nothing we can do.”
REALLY? Nothing they can do? Here’s an idea - spend ONE NIGHT waiting for it to happen (because it will) and then catch the guys! I mean, this isn’t brain surgery. If you know where and when a crime is going to be committed…why not stop it?
It is clear residents know to avoid it —the street is the only place in the area where parking is always abundant.
It is really unfortunate that in an otherwise safe and quiet neighborhood, a specific block must be avoided at all costs because of near certainty that hoodlums will be breaking into cars.
Once they solve that problem, maybe the city could clean up the years-worth of shattered glass that lines the sidewalk.
manhattan college, go away
stupid manhattan college kids are terrorizing the neighborhood by being drunk all the time in broad daylight.
